Redefining the Vanguard Brand
I developed a new image strategy that moved Vanguard beyond traditional stock photography and toward authentic, everyday moments that felt distinctly human.

The challenge
Vanguard needed a clear visual strategy for how the brand should show up in the world. Image choices had become subjective enough that the CEO was personally selecting photography, signaling that the design team needed a stronger foundation for making those decisions.
The goal was not a new photography style. It was a lasting strategy designers could use with confidence.
Finding the idea
I led research with executives and customers, audited competitor imagery, and worked with the team to identify where Vanguard could look and feel different. The research showed that existing imagery did not reflect how people saw their own lives.
That work led to a simple organizing idea: Defining Moments — When a Simple Truth Is Revealed. Instead of staged financial-services imagery, we would photograph people in real situations and let motion, focus and depth of field make the moments feel immediate and personal.

From strategy to system
After executive approval, I led the work from concept through execution, including photographer selection, models, locations and art direction. Over nine months, the team completed more than 12 shoots across three states.
The strategy was intentionally flexible. Photographers could bring their own point of view while the defining principles kept the work recognizably Vanguard across businesses and channels.

The result
The new approach gave Vanguard a cohesive visual narrative while returning image decisions to the design team. It was adopted across Financial Advisor, Institutional, Corporate and International businesses and created a more consistent, recognizable brand across channels.
Most importantly, the strategy was built to last. It provided enough structure to protect the brand while leaving room for creative interpretation.
